Sticks and Stones

We were discussing Sal's kid in class today, and the choices he has made in attempting to shield her from materialism. I agree wholeheartedly with his efforts, though at some points extreme, to have his daughter grow up in a traditionally child-like way, rather than sitting on the couch watching TV constantly.
Anyways, I was thinking about growing up and all the games we used to play outside - truth or dare, ring around the rosie - and all of the sayings we had when the bully came along, my favorite at the time was "sticks and stones can break my bone but words can never hurt me!" That saying is one of the least true statements I have ever heard, honestly. Children of all people know the power of words and should harvest it, though it is often first learned in a negative way when one is first called a poopyface.

I feel like our childhood was a lot more wholesome than today's kids.

I mean we didn't have the internet or Comcast digital cable...plus turtlenecks were totally in...and we actually did a lot of outdoorsy things and games because there was nothing better to do.

Maybe i'm just speaking from a standpoint of a kid who grew up in the city, but you're a canadian so you should understand :).

I feel like as technology advances it's harder to keep the good old ideals of childhood alive because little kids would rather open up webkins accounts (new age neopets) or play with gadgets like cellphones.

My nine year old cousin has a cellphone...what the hell?

I think it's inevitable that my children will be raised by robots unless society gets a grip on gadgets.

P.S: poo on you...you're super talented. I can't do anything well in 2D...and you are a left hander(sign of brilliance)

when we were younger we had a pretty fun childhood growing up from playing all those games outdoors and hand games. You look at kids today and you will barely see much of them outside because now they can access the internet. i see many young kids with their cellphones i mean cmon! i know of some people who just got cell phones old enough to handle them. Also boys are stuck inside because of all those different kinds of portable video game psp.

Your comment on the saying, " Stick and stones can break my bones but words will never hurt me", i also think that is a false statement i worked with the lil pats and when one would call another one a poopy face or tell them something like you smell the child would get really upset and cry. Words can be very hurtful, and people should watch what they are saying. The words we call each other to offend someone is strong to make a person feel bad..you don't need to fight with someone to cause them harm because words are also seen as verbal abuse causing even greater damage to someones self-esteem.
